What a great day we had. We read the names on our valentines and at the end of the day when we went to put our things in our backpacks, we found teddy bears in our backpacks. It was so fun! The pictures tell all.

Someone left a mysterious note in Mrs. Terluk's book telling us we need to find a special surprise. As a class we solved the mystery. We guessed that a surprise was hidden outside for us. We went outside and saw stuffed animals hidden all over the playground. We ran, laughed and each picked up a special new stuffed friend. It was a glorious day!

December Fun

We had a wonderful time going from room to room singing our wonderful carols. Everyone loved having us come to their windows. We practiced so much and we sounded wonderful. We even sang to Mrs. Poore and her office visitors. When we were done we all enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies. It was a wonderful day.

Ornament Night

Ornament Night was a huge success! Everyone seemed to have a great time including the many volunteers that came to help set up (including my son and niece). The children loved spending the night creating many ornaments and eating wonderful treats. Happy memories for all.

I am so proud of my AM kindergarteners. What a great job they did handling the many changes that took place last Tuesday. All of the students were so good!

I am also thankful to Mrs. Darling and Ms. Brittany for doing an excellent job helping the children adjust to the changes and helping many of them get a hot lunch for the first time. Way to go!

Our class was planning a small celebration on April 1, but of course that has been canceled. I am now planning our celebration for Friday April 9. If you are still able to send in fruit, please send it in. If you are not able to send in fruit, please do not worry. Also, if you would like to volunteer on Friday, send me a note.

In closing, there are really no words that I could type to explain how saddened I am with the recent flood situation in Rhode Island (and Connecticut). If there are any families in need of help, please do not hesitate to ask.

A Wonderful Shape Celebration

What a wonderful day we all had last Friday! Our day started with a meeting and an explanation of what will take place; including a short lesson on "table manners." We then put on our shape hats and went on a shape hunt around Charlestown School. We found many different shapes and we filled in our graphs. When we returned to our room we washed our hands and prepared to make shape sculptures from the food items that were donated. After ten minutes of building we drew a pictures of our sculptures, so we can always remember our special day. Then..we ATE our sculptures. It was so much fun,,,and very yummy!

Thank you to all the parents who donated items for this wonderful day. One child said, "This was the best day of my life." Your support is always appreciated.

Happy Groundhog Day

Shape Olympics

He had a great time during Shape Olympics. We had to say the name of each shape as we did each event.
We walked a triangle balance beam, carried a wooden oval, crawled through a circle and so much more. We had a great time!

We Welcome Miss Brittany

We are so fortunate to have a student teacher from the University of Rhode Island. Her name is Miss Brittany. She will be with us until May. We welcome her to our class.

Miss Emily, our high school volunteer, has moved on to second grade. We enjoyed having her in our room for the first part of the year and we will miss her.

On A Cold Day...This Could Melt Your Heart

We had such a special week. Mrs. Terluk brought in her son's stuffed bear, Doby. The children heard stories about Doby's adventures with Jonathan all week. They also listened to books about many other bears, too.
On the day before vacation the children noticed Doby was missing. He left us a special note inside the last book Mrs. Terluk read. He said that his friends wanted to meet us. We had to use clues from the note to figure out where Doby's friends were hiding.
We soon discovered they were outside hidden in the snow. We enjoyed running through the snow to find the bears. It was absolutely heartwarming. The children were so appreciative and could not believe they were getting such a special bear. They hugged the bears...and even shared their snacks with them at snack time.
It was so magical...I think some adults had tears in their eyes.

Fa-La-La-La-La

If you happened to hear a beautiful sound one day...it may have been the K-T Kindergarten Carolers! After learning the right words to some familiar holiday tunes, the children went outside to carol. (The weather was perfect; snowy and cold!) They knocked on the classroom windows and sang their hearts out. They even made one teacher cry tears of joy!
When the children came back in they were treated with hot chocolate and cookies.
It was a memorable day!

November Fun

November was a great month in K-T! We had so much fun! We learned the Turkey Lurkey song, learned a little bit about the Mayflower and learned a little bit about Native American traditional stories.
On November 25 we had a great time. We went outside to our outside classroom. There we learned that there were turkeys hidden on the nature trail. We gobbled our way down the path to try and find them. Once we found them we discovered that the turkeys were taped on boxes and bags. In the boxes and bags were items that people donated for our friendship trail mix! When we went inside we had a great time making our own trail mix. It was so much fun!

A special thank you to the parents that donated items for our trail mix! The smiles in the pictures tell you how much we appreciate your donations.

Another special thank you to the Boy Scouts for creating such a wonderful outside classroom for us to go to and learn.

The Firetrucks Came to School

We enjoyed having the firetrucks come to school. We went to the cafeteria and listened to Julie and Joe tell us all about what firefighters do. They even let some children try on the safety gear that they wear. Then we went outside to look at the firetrucks and learn more. It was awesome! Before they left they gave all of us pencils, coloring books, hats and badges.

What a Wonderful Day

We all had a wonderful day in kindergarten. Mrs. Terluk told us a story about a farmer who lost all his pumpkins. Then she sent us on a hunt to find paper pumpkins in our school. We had so much fun trying to find the pumpkins. Once we found one, we had to match it to the pumpkins on our worksheet and color in the box next to the one we found. It was a lot of fun. Then something weird happened. When we returned to our classroom all of our real pumpins disappeared! We soon found out that they were out on the playground hidden. It was so much fun to go fine them! After, we brought them in and decorated them. You can see in the slide show that they came out great!

A special thanks to all the volunteers that helped make the day so fun!
Another special thanks to all the parents who donated items for our celebration. We had more than enough. The extras were donated to a food pantry.
A final thank you to Mrs. Beaudry and her fourth grade students for hiding all the pumpkins!

It Was A Dark and Stormy Night.

The Pumpkin Princess came to school! We enjoyed having her visit our room. She told us stories, let us dance and so much more.
After she left we wrote about her in our journals. Many of us loved her guitar and her dress.

We are going batty with a lot of fun and learning! We learned a lot about bats this week. Mrs. Terluk read a lot of books about bats. We loved hearing all the stories. Ask me to tell you some bat facts. Then we went to learning centers.

Fire Safety Week

We enjoyed Fire Safety Week.
We learned a new song about calling 911 when there is a fire.
We had fun using the sand table and finding paper fire trucks with the letters that make our names.
We made fire dog puppets and listened to many fire safety books.
It was a great week.

2T had a special visitor. Mrs. Safford, a retired first grade teacher, came to 2T to read a wonderful story about turtles. She even brought in a turtle puppet. It was a special treat.

Proud! That is the one word that comes to my mind when I think of 2T! The books they wrote were awesome. Watching the students read their books and autograph them was a treat. It was an evening that I hope no one will ever forget.

We loved observing the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly. It was amazing to watch each stage. We will never forget this wonderful experience.

Something is Bugging Us....

but not for long. We made our own bug boxes to capture those bugs! Ha! Ha!

Mr. and Mrs. Huzyk came in and taught us how to make our own bug boxes. It was a great project and we loved having them come in. They brought in all sorts of tools and supplies for us to use to create our bug boxes. We are so grateful to them.

After, we read information about catching bugs and keeping them. We took the information paper home with us so that we can remember safe ways to capture bugs.

Thank you so much for all the donations. Our play will be a huge success because of your help. We have most of the items needed and I will purchase the rest. Your help has eased the cost greatly.

Young Author Night slips will go home this week. Please return the slips as soon as possible, so I can prepare all the books and purchase needed supplies.

It is May and 2T has already been so busy. We will be working on many things this month.

A note went home asking for supplies to help us with many upcoming projects. If you are able to send in any items, we will certainly put them to use.

Young Author books were due May 28. We will be having a celebration to celebrate all the efforts of our special authors. A note will come come soon informing you of the date.

Mother's Day gifts were packed up and sent home on Friday. We hope all mothers enjoy all of their special surprises and this special day.

Last Day

May 1 was a sad day in 2T. It was hard to say goodbye to Ms. Dei. She has been a wonderful addition to our class and we will miss her.
Thank you so much for all the donations. The children decorated a bag and it was full of wonderful teaching supplies thanks to you.
An additional thank you to Mrs. Huzyk for baking yummy cupcakes for our goodbye celebration.

Game Night

What a wonderful evening! Watching the children "sign" the National Anthem brought tears of pride to my eyes. I am sure that you all agree that they helped to start the night off just right.

The pot luck dinner was delicious and the game playing was fun! Everyone seemed to have such a great time and the "turn out" for this event was spectacular.

I hope everyone enjoyed their take home surprises and that the children shared their I Spy books with you. It took a long to to print the books and I am hopeful that they will become a family treasure.

A special thank you to all the 2T families that came to this special event. It would not have been possible without all of you.

Reading Week Was a Huge Success!

Reading Week Was a Huge Success!

We made reading sashes. As each child read a book they added a badge to their reading sash. The students were so proud to parade around in their sashes and vocabulary hats on Friday.

Making giant posters was a huge success, too. We drew pictures of our favorite books and our posters are amazing. You would think that fifth graders drew the pictures. They are outstanding.

Ms. Cole came in and told us the story Big Al. She had us captivated by her excellent storytelling. She even brought in a few Big Al activities for us to do.

Mrs. Huzyk came in and read to us. She read Skippyjon Jones. She is a great story teller.

On Friday everyone in the school read out in the hallway. The school was so quiet as everyone read their favorite book.

We played our games with the first, second, third and fourth graders. They were all so kind and told us what a great job we did creating our games.

Reading Week was a HUGE success! Look at the slide show below and you will see that our week was full of fun educational activities.

Let's Figure This Out!

Mrs. Terluk gave us a challenge! She handed us a bucket full of seeds and corn meal. She also gave us some tools, but would not tell us how to use the tools. Each small group needed to work as a team to figure out how to separate the mixture. It was a lot of fun and we learned a great deal. One student even said, " I learned that it is easier to solve problems and get the job done when you listen to each other and work as a team."

Using screens proved to be very helpful for some of the mixture, but not for everything in mixture.

Think Green

We have had so much snow! It is a pleasure to finally "think green."
2T spent part of St. Patrick's Day working on a Think (green) Tac Toe. The children had to choose which activities they wanted to complete on the Think Tac Toe board. All children needed to complete at least 3 activities.

Let's Prove What We Know!

We took turns sorting solids. Our group members had to guess the property of the items that we placed inside the circle. It was a lot of fun. After we played this fun science game, we had to prove our knowledge by sorting the items and drawing them inside the sorting circle if they matched the written property (see bottom of the ditto) and outside the circle if they did not match the property.

We LOVE Science

Just look at how much we love science. After we built our towers, we drew pictures of them. We had to draw every detail and then write about them. We were challenged when Mrs. Sheehy came in and tried to match our written work to our towers. We must have done an excellent job, because she matched each piece of work perfectly.

We have been enjoying our science unit about solids. We created some wonderful towers and learned about the different properties of solids. We are now able to use the new science terms to identify the various properties on our towers.
We also linked this unit to other curriculum areas. Since this week we were learning about the sound of long I, we created and I Spy book. We incorporated rhyming words, science words, our towers and more. Mrs. Terluk is making a copy of this wonderful book. It will be a treasure, but for now try to spy I. C. Himm in each of the pictures below.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss

We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 3 because of the snow day. We had a lot of fun! We made Cat in the Hat necklaces, worked on an activity packet and even completed some floor puzzles! We must be the busiest class in the world!

Science - Solids - Building Towers

We have just started a new science unit about solids and liquids. Using items from the GEMSNET kit and from the recycle center, we created some amazing towers. We will use the towers to create a wonderful book. It will be similar to Walter Wick's I Spy books.

English Language Arts

We love to read and write. We also love to listen to stories. We enjoy reflecting upon chapter books and creating special projects that help us further a deeper understanding. This month we heard the book The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. After, we made clay images of our favorite parts and wrote about what we learned from Edward. It was a wonderful assignment.

Science

We enjoyed wrapping up our Air and Weather unit by learning about space. We even made our own moon necklaces. Each child looked up (on the internet) what the moon looked like on his/her birthday and printed a copy. They set the print into clay and then colored around the print. Each child also researched the type of moon and wrote information on a research card. We thought this activity was OUT OF THIS WORLD!

We LOVE to write! We all had a great time writing about what love means. We worked so hard and enjoyed taking photos. Look carefully! You will see that we even spelled the word LOVE with our bodies.
